NFLPA head Gene Upshaw dies at 63 (AP)

Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame guard who during a quarter century as union head helped get NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died. He was 63. Upshaw died Wednesday night at his home in Lake Tahoe, Calif., of pancreatic cancer, which was diagnosed only last Sunday, the NFL Players Association said Thursday.

Rams running back Steven Jackson ended his holdout on Wednesday and St. Louis appeared on the verge of signing him to a new multiyear contract. Steelers give LB Farrior 5 years, $18.2M (AP)

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed linebacker James Farrior to a five-year, $18.2 million contract with a $5 million signing bonus on Thursday. He'll make $12.6 million over the first three seasons. The last two years of the deal are meant to lessen the salary cap impact of the deal. Farrior's agent, Ralph Cindrich, said the contract is meant to keep the 12-year veteran with the team until he retires.
